Open Arms Ltd is a provider of quality Alternative Education Provision in County Durham. Located in the quiet village of Escomb, two miles from Bishop Auckland, Open Arms is based on a farm and riding therapy centre.
Students attend from year 8 to year 11 and we are currently working alongside SportsWorld to provide post 16 work placement with the horses.
Our students travel from all over County Durham and North Yorkshire. Transport is organised through feeder schools and/or the Local Authority.
Students can choose from a range of packages and activities to suit individual needs.
The majority of students work towards Functional Skills examinations in Maths and English every morning. We also incorporate Personal and Social Education in our curriculum.
A BTec in Sport is offered on a Friday morning.
We even have our own football team!
On an afternoon, students enjoy a range of offsite sporting activities or stay on site to ride and work with the horses.
Some students spend the whole day riding and developing skills in horse care and stable management.
We have staff on the stable yard to support them in this.
One of our teaching staff is a qualified Beautician and assessor so we have recently introduced beauty activities for those interested and is proving very popular.
As a provider, we work closely with feeder schools, social services and other health professionals as well as families and carers.
We strongly believe that students are nurtured at Open Arms and this is the key to our success. Students build positive relationships with our staff and due to the small numbers, staff can get to know our students really well.
We know that students feel calm here, enjoy their learning and activities on offer. Behaviour is good and attendance is generally superb.
Breakfast is provided if required and lunch money given to students for lunch.
Some students are with us full time, others a few days per week. Some students are placed at Open Arms until the end of year 11. Others are with us as a positive intervention and then return to main stream school.
Students are referred by mainstream schools, Pupil Referral Units and Social Services.
We welcome teaching staff, parents/carers and students to come and visit, have a chat, meet everyone and try a taster day.
Open from 9:30 - 3:30 Monday to Friday. Student day is from 9:20 - 2:30.
Visits to be arranged by appointment.
